Harris tweed is a unique cloth that has been dyed, spun and handwoven in the Outer Hebrides - a small chain of remote and rugged islands just off the western coast of Scotland. It is still handwoven by villagers in their own cottages on traditional manual handlooms, as it has been for hundreds of years.
Harris tweed is protected by a British Act of Parliament. Every 50 metres of cloth has to be certified by an official from the Harris Tweed Authority, to prove that is genuine Harris tweed - only then can it bear the official Orb symbol of the Harris Tweed Authority.
It has been the cloth of choice for well dressed British ladies and gentlemen for centuries and is favoured by British aristocrats, the British royal family, and more recently, top designers and retailers such as Paul Smith and Hugo Boss.
